What Is Handmade Soap — And How Is It Different From What's on the Grocery Store Shelf?
Handmade soap is soap made by combining plant-based oils with a lye solution through a chemical process called saponification. When oils and lye react completely, they transform into two things: soap molecules that clean, and glycerin that conditions. The glycerin stays in the finished bar. That single fact — that handmade soap retains its glycerin while commercial soap has it removed — explains most of what people notice when they make the switch. The soap simply behaves differently, because it is a fundamentally different product.
How is handmade soap made?
The most common method for handmade soap is called cold process soapmaking. Glycerin is a humectant, which means it draws moisture toward whatever surface it's on. In a bar of soap, glycerin draws moisture toward your skin during the wash and helps the skin retain hydration through the rinse. This is why handmade soap feels different from commercial soap on the skin — not because of any additive or special ingredient, but because of what's retained from the basic soapmaking process.
Commercial soap manufacturers extract the glycerin from their soap after production and sell it separately, typically into the cosmetics industry where it appears in moisturizers and serums at a premium price. The commercial bar that's left behind after glycerin extraction is a leaner, harsher product. This is not a quality judgment — it's a production economics decision. Glycerin is worth more as a standalone ingredient than as a component of mass-market soap. How is handmade soap different from the soap at the grocery store?

A genuine handmade cold process bar typically has six to twelve ingredients. If the list runs much longer, it's worth looking closer at what's been added and why.
The bar should be fully cured. Uncured or undercured soap is softer, dissolves faster, and lathers less consistently. Reputable handmade soapmakers cure their bars for a minimum of four weeks before selling them. This isn't always something you can verify from a label, but buying from an established maker with a track record is a reasonable proxy.
The maker should be transparent about their process and ingredients. The handmade soap community has a strong culture of ingredient honesty, and makers who sell at markets, online, or through their own stores should be able to answer questions about their formulas directly.
How do you get the most out of a handmade bar?
The biggest factor in how long a handmade bar lasts is drainage. Handmade bars contain more glycerin than commercial bars, which makes them slightly more water-retentive. Left sitting in a puddle of water between uses, a handmade bar softens and dissolves faster than it should. On a well-draining soap dish or a soap lift that allows air circulation underneath the bar, the same bar can last two to four weeks or longer in regular daily use.
Handmade soap works well on both body and face for most people, particularly formulas built on gentle oil blends with no synthetic fragrance. The naturally retained glycerin makes handmade bars particularly good for people who wash their face with bar soap, since the skin there is thinner and more reactive to stripping formulas.
